I love the primacy of drawing and over the past few years have developed several processes that center on the relationship of mark making to surface. Originally a landscape painter, I still approach my pictorial space as a landscape, though in much of the work this is more metaphysical than observational. I enjoy making landscapes of the imagination, where unpredictable things happen and discoveries are made. At the same time, I still ground myself by drawing from nature. Balancing these two inclinations, I often find myself negotiating two opposing forces – the gravitational pull of the horizon and the buoyancy of imaginative life. I am now starting to make paintings again and will have those images as they are finished.
