Curation Overview

Janie’s major curatorial project has been co-founding and co-curating The Annual Exhibitions of Artists in Michigan Prisons, a project of the Prison Creative Arts Project at the University of Michigan. Her other curatorial projects have also revolved around incarceration and freedom.

1996 – to present
The Annual Exhibitions of Artists in Michigan Prison

In 1996 Janie and her late husband, Buzz Alexander, organized an exhibit of work by incarcerated people in Michigan. It became an annual event and continues every year to draw large audiences. A group of curators, including Janie, select work from all state prisons in Michigan, exhibiting over 600 works by over 300 artists each year. This exhibit is a project of the Prison Creative Arts Project (PCAP), which Buzz founded in 1990, at the University of Michigan.

PCAP also supports arts workshops inside prisons and returning citizens from the PCAP community. See the links below for more information on these and other exhibits she has curated.
